A closer view of the wall covered in swastikas. Most people don't know that the swastika is a Hindu motif that dates back many thousands of years. Unfortunately, in the west it has come to be associated with Hitler and the Nazis - an image completely opposite to it's intended and original one. Also, interestingly, the swastikas on this wall had been fashioned from cow dung.

Typical of a lot of Indian villages, there are several religious icons here. The white structure is a mosque behind which you can see a wall covered in Hindu (not Nazi) swastikas.

I always thought that Indian villages were drab and dreary, full of earthen shades of grey and brown. Not so! There are healthy and (by our standards) unusual splashes of colour all over the place.

I visited a village in Uttar Pradesh recently and was awed by the tranquility of village life. Being a city person myself, I found myself almost envying this young boy's ability to play in the grass, get upto healthy mischief, and lie under a warm sun without a care in the world.
